Update on training offered by the Creative Commons

Starting in 2027, CC plans to launch a new series of short trainings, complete with individual microcredentials, to provide community members more educational content based on the most relevant, up-to-date thinking in a new digital era. Together, these courses will bring learners along a learning pathway where they can build new skills to better navigate knowledge and culture sharing in a new digital era. Learners will be able to earn CC Certification and/or advanced CC Certification, depending on the number of courses they complete along particular pathways. The courses will be shorter and stackable, giving learners more options to customize which courses they take to earn the credential / gain the knowledge they’re seeking. We also plan to make more content available at low and no cost, allowing greater access to key concepts and principles.

What this also means: we plan to sunset the current format of CC Certificate online courses after the June 2027 courses are completed. Now is one of your last chances to get CC Certified in one of our remaining 10-week online courses. Please sign up for either the September 2026 courses while there are tickets available, or register for the January or June 2027 courses. Please also share this email with any colleagues who may be interested.

As a reminder: all CC Certificate courses–Educators, Academic Librarians, or Open Culture–teach the basics of: 

• Copyright

• The public domain

• Limitations and exceptions to copyright such as fair use

• CC licenses and how to use them

• Additional considerations in open efforts, such as accessibility needs, traditional knowledge efforts, open education and AI, and more.

 

Beyond the basics, CC courses connect participants to kindred colleagues, as well as copyright and open access experts around the world.

Also, a reminder that we still have generous funding from the Arcadia Foundation to offset the cost of the September 2026 CC Certificate for Open Culture courses by 60%. We’re really proud to have made the CC Certificate, our flagship training program, a successful investment in the global community of open advocates since 2018. We’re pleased to share that 2,452 people have been CC Certified across 74 countries to date.
