Many of my colleagues come from other countries and can speak to patrons in their native languages, but lots of others (both librarians and clerks) are monolingual and intimidated by/resentful of the potential need to learn a few words in something other than English. Libraries could provide lexicons of library-related terms in the frequently-spoken languages of the community, and staff should be encouraged to use some work time to study in some way.Brooklynitenoreply@blogger.com
